OUR COACHES
Head Coach Marc Tourville  

Coach Tourville begins his first season as head coach, second year as a Raider. Prior to Sonora, Coach Tourville spent a 16 year stint at Buena Park HS. His Philosophy as head coach is to provide our athletes with as many top qualified coaches as possible. Coach Tourville graduated from Montgomery HS in Santa Rosa, CA, where he excelled in three sports... Football, Basketball and Track. He went to Long Beach State on a football scholarship and also participated on the track & field team as a decathlete. He graduated from LB State in 1990, continued on to get his credential and began teaching at Buena Park HS in 1992. Tourville continued his education earning his Masters and Administrative credential from CSU Fullerton. He has two boys, ten year old Blake and two year old Dalton James.

Head Long Jump & Triple Jump Coach
Coach Witt begins his first year as an assistant after 11 seasons as Sonora's most productive head coach. During his 10 years the Raiders compiled a 39-11 Freeway League record for the boys and a 37-13 record for the girls with Freeway League titles in 2001, 02, 03 & 04 on the boys side and Freeway League titles on the girls side in 2007 7 08! Cory graduated from Sonora High School in 1993, and has been coaching the soccer team for the past 15 years. Cory received his Bachelors Degree from California State University, Fullerton, and completed his credential program in 1999. He recently received his Master’s Degree from Azusa Pacific University (2002). Cory resides in Whittier with his lovely wife Amy, beautiful daughter Kailey (6), and studly son Riley (3), both of whom are exceptionally fast!

Head Distance Coach
Jose Diaz returns as our distance coach for his third year. He is also the head cross country coach. This season will mark Coach Diaz’s 5th year with our track team, three years as an assistant, prior to taking over in 2008. Jose graduated from Sonora (Class of 2001) where he competed on the track & field team in the 3200 meters, 1600 meters, 800 meters and Mile Relay. He competed at the CIF level in the 3200 meters and ran a high school, personal best time of 9:50. After high school, Jose went to Fullerton College and competed in the 5K and 10K for the track & field team. He is currently enrolled at Fullerton College and plans to transfer to CSUF and eventually become a teacher.

Assistant Coach Roderic West  

Head Sprint Coach
Roderic enters his second season coaching with the Raisers. he is no stranger to track and field, and more importantly Sonora High School. Roderic ran track at Sonora from 2001-2004, coincidentally, these are the years that Sonora’s boys team won the Freeway League title! Rod specialized in the 200 and 400 and both relays, but was often called upon to run the individual 100 as well. While there is not room to list all of his accolades, we will tell you that Rod was voted the track and field athlete of the year twice (2003 & 04). Coach West is a fierce competitor and even nicer young man. We are thrilled to have him working with our sprinters this year, and hope to have him around for many years to come.

Assistant Coach Ron Burnes  

Head Throws Coach
Ron enters his second season coaching with the Raiders. Coach Burnes has a little Raider blood in him as well. Not only does he have to children (Kellen and Alicia) who attend Sonora, but he also graduated from this fine institution of learning in 1985! During his four years in high school, he competed in football, wrestling and track & field. After high school he earned his AA degree from Fullerton College and landed a job as a Los Angeles Sherriff where he has remained employed for the past 21 years (and counting). He is excited about getting back on the track and we look forward to having him work with our magnificent throwers.

Assistant Coach Kylie McCuen    

Girls' Sprint Coach
Kiely enters her first year as a Raider coach but is in no way a rookie. Kiely has been an assistant at UC Santa Barbara after competing there as one of the most decorated sprinters in their school history.

 

Assistant Coach Dan Wilson  

Girls' Hurdles Coach
Dan returns to Sonora after a long stint with Brea HS as their hurdles coach. Dan began his career here at Sonora some . . . ago. Coach Wilson is recognized as one of the premier hurdle coaches in Orange County and we are blessed to have him.

Assistant Coach Guillermo Garcia  

Assistant Middle and Distance Coach
Guillermo is a new addition to our staff but has a Riader background. Guillermo will be coaching our 800 m and 400 m runners.

Assistant Throws Coach
Rob Love returns to Sonora for his 5th year as the assistant throws' coach. A former graduate from Sonora, Rob excelled on the field as a football player and thrower for the track team. He graduated in 2003, and took with him three Freeway League track and field championships. He loves working with young athletes and we are so happy to have him back for another year. Rob is another coach with a passion for working with young athletes. His spirit and energy will resonate with the throwers he works with.
